SONETO A CÓRDOBA
Tu honda raíz de gravedad romana,
dórico aroma en mármol de ruinas
su alma trasciende en flor por las esquinas
del aire que te asiste musulmana.
Córdoba de la almena y la campana,
del silencio estancado en hornacinas,
paredes de cal muerta y gongorinas
torres a piedra y luna en filigrana.
Lirio al río por el alba labradora
y al pie del monte inexpresable anhelo
de ser nube ermitaña o ser pastora
o alamar para el traje azul de cielo
que tu Arcángel de luces gasta y dora
en la órbita andaluza de su vuelo.

SONNET TO CÓRDOBA
Your deep root of Roman gravity,
Doric scent in ruins carved of stone,
transcends in blooms that blossom, softly blown, on corners where the Muslim air moves free.
Córdoba of towers and liturgy,
of stillness sealed in sacred niche and bone,
of whitewashed walls where time has turned to stone, and filigree of moon and masonry.
Lily to river in the toiling dawn,
and at the mountain’s foot, that mute desire to be a hermit cloud, a shepherd drawn,
or brooch upon the sky’s blue robe entire,
worn by your Archangel, whose wings are shone with Andalusian gold and holy fire.
